Amid the dizzying urban chaos of KoreaTown sits Chelsea Day School, a six-storey schoolhouse that prides itself on being a progressive, responsive educational oasis for children aged two through five.
Nurturing children’s natural curiosity and blossoming imagination is a central tenet of the school’s pedagogical philosophy. Administrators were searching for ways to reinforce these principles through the layout and design of the school itself.
With a keen understanding of the school constituents needs, LIFTnewyork devised a plan to create an experience that was appropriately bold but still accessible to students, teachers and parents alike. The environment needed to be simultaneously stimulating, playful and serene.
LIFTnewyork collaborated with comtemparary pop artist Kenji Hirata to create an homage to the power of a child’s open mind. This 3-dimensional metaphor transformed a walk to class into a magical, provocative and positive “ride” that expresses the mission of Chelsea Day School – to embrace that child-like spirit within us all.
